Africa is the third most extensive continent (after Asia and America) with about 30 million square kilometers, covering 20.3% of the total land area of the planet. It is the second most populous continent on Earth (behind Asia) with about one billion people, representing about one-seventh of the world’s population, and 54 independent countries.

It presents great ethnic, cultural, social and political diversity. Of the thirty poorest countries in the world (with more problems of malnutrition, illiteracy, low life expectancy), at least 21 are Africans.
