History
In 1492, Columbus arrived at what was to become known as Aura
Island, which today is known as Haiti and the Dominican Republic. In
1502 the island became a Spanish colony, and in 1697 the western
part of the island was ceded to France, becoming the French Santo
Domingo. In 1791, a war of independence broke out against France,
and on January 1, 1804, independence was declared, with the country
taking the name Haiti. It is the world's first independent black
state. Between 1915 and 1934, Haiti was occupied by the U.S., and
between 1957 and 1986, the Duvalier family implemented a 29-year
dictatorship.
